Optical Assembly Engineer

Huntington Beach area

 

Designs new optical assemblies and updates existing optical assemblies to support our commitment to manufacture exceptional products through continuous improvement. Optical Assembly Engineers work as lead for utilizing state-of-the art methods for optical system design and in sustaining efforts for existing product designs (upgrading, cost reduction and maintaining manufacturability).

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·        Performs function of Subject Matter Expert for optical components.

·        Determines and specifies processes required to manufacture/assemble optical parts in order to achieve product specifications and performance requirements to ensure successful product delivery.

·        Designs and participates in construction of optical assembly tools and test instruments

·        Performs feasibility study achieve development of new products including research and implementation of new technologies.

·        Confers with Engineering team by attending regular meetings to clarify or resolve problems during the design and development process to ensure that design specifications meet existing engineering requirements.

·        Compile and analyze operational, test, and research data using Microsoft Excel to establish performance standards for newly designed or modified equipment or product.

·        Plan and develop experimental test programs utilizing existing data from previous testing procedures in order to improve upon design testing methods within Engineering.

·        Analyzes test data and reports using optical software and other mathematical means to determine if product design meets functional and performance specifications.

·        Maintain design records including, but not limited to: meeting notes, record of Product Inputs, test documentation, action items and resolutions, patent documents & detailed drawings

·        Prepares product models, detailed drawings and schematics, utilizing SolidWorks, to present to the Engineering and Product Development teams.

·        Determines design production feasibility utilizing existing manufacturing processes and methodologies by analyzing product specifications and performance requirements.

·        Provides the Engineering and Management teams with technical information related to manufacturing processing techniques, which determine the feasibility of new product development.

·        Develops test procedures utilizing previous data, if available, to validate product assembly designs and determines if product design meets functional performance specifications.

·        Works with outside vendors and fabricators to obtain quotes and produce product prototypes.

·        Maintain good attendance and punctuality.

·        Maintain a positive and respectful attitude; cooperate with co-workers, management, internal and external customers, as applicable. Report any incidents of harassment to your Supervisor, Manager or Human Resources Manager.

·        Work safely at all times and report any unsafe conditions or injuries to your Supervisor or Manager immediately.

 

 

Qualifications

·        Minimum six years of optical assembly design experience and demonstrated knowledge of optical manufacturing processes and design trade-offs.

·        Knowledge of optical material qualities and properties, manufacturing procedures and ASME, ANSI and ISO standards.

·        Extensive knowledge of optical coating specifications and performance

·        Extensive knowledge of optical bonding, including specification and evaluation of adhesives with considerations for optical clarity, bond performance, and system longevity

·        Extensive knowledge of physical mounting considerations for optical components and assemblies

·        Working knowledge of optical system characterization and associated instruments (interferometers, surface profilers, polarimeters, etc.)

·        Knowledge of optical design software such as Zemax is a plus

·        Outstanding oral and written communication skills and a proven track record of successful and timely completion of

·        Bachelor's Degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics with optical specialization and/or minimum 6 years relevant work experience.
