Summary
Design new products and update existing products to support our commitment to manufacture exceptional products through continuous improvement. Mechanical Design Engineers work as lead for new product design and in sustaining efforts for existing product designs (upgrading, cost reduction and maintaining manufacturability). The position requires interface with other engineers (Optical, Electrical, Thermal and Manufacturing), Product Management, Marketing, Material Management, Legal Affairs, Quality Control, Trade Compliance & Executive Management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
§ Perform function of Project Lead for assigned projects.
§ Determine and specify processes required to manufacture component parts in order to achieve product specifications and performance requirements to ensure successful product delivery.
§ Perform feasibility study to develop concepts to achieve development of new products including research and implementation of new technologies.
§ Confer with Engineering team by attending regular meetings to clarify or resolve problems during the design and development process to ensure that design specifications meet existing engineering requirements.
§ Prepares or directs preparation of product or system layout and detailed drawings and schematics using SolidWorks for presentation to Engineering Management.
§ Compile and analyze operational, test, and research data using Microsoft Excel to establish performance standards for newly designed or modified equipment or product.
§ Plan and develop experimental test programs utilizing existing data from previous testing procedures in order to improve upon design testing methods within Engineering.
§ Analyzes test data and reports using Microsoft Excel to determine if product design meets functional and performance specifications.
§ Maintain design records including, but not limited to: meeting notes, record of Product Inputs, test documentation, action items and resolutions, patent documents & detailed drawings
§ Prepares product models, detailed drawings and schematics, utilizing SolidWorks, to present to the Engineering and Product Development teams.
§ Determines design production feasibility utilizing existing manufacturing processes and methodologies by analyzing product specifications and performance requirements.
§ Provides the Engineering and Management teams with technical information related to manufacturing processing techniques, which determine the feasibility of new product development.
§ Develops test procedures utilizing previous data, if available, to validate product subassembly designs and determines if product design meets functional performance specifications.
§ Works with outside vendors and fabricators to obtain quotes and produce product prototypes.
Qualifications
§ Minimum two years of Product Design experience dealing with electro-mechanical products and proven knowledge of manufacturing processes and design trade-offs.
§ Working knowledge of GD&T standards for drawing development required
§ Knowledge of material qualities and properties, manufacturing procedures and ASME, ANSI and ISO standards.
§ Working knowledge of Solidworks FEA required
§ Outstanding oral and written communication skills and a proven track record of successful and timely completion of projects.
§ Extensive SolidWorks and MS Office experience
§ Minimum two years of design experience with miniaturized and high precision mechanical systems
§ Experience with optomechanical systems a plus
§ Experience with fast prototyping and additive manufacturing a plus
Education
§ Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and/or up to 4 years relevant work experience.
